SACLA Health Project

Summary

This organisation was initiated at the South African Christian Leadership Assembly, held in Pretoria in 1979. It started as a clinic addressing the lack of health services in townships. As a NGO, they faced challenges that led to the dissolution of the organisation in 2002. Community members who were directly affected by the issues of health services, decided it was best that community members take action and continue with providing the services to the community of Old Crossroads. The organisation is currently based in New Crossroads and offers a clinic and home based care to the chronically ill.

Khuthi's Home Care and Development

Summary

Khuti's was initiated by a retired teacher and a friend in 2002. The two women saw a need to take care of the physically challenged children in the community of Khayelitsha. Their idea was that they provide support to families who ‘adopts' the children in order to ensure that they are not isolated from the rest of the community. The organisation stopped their operations in 2005 due to various challenges they faced and resumed in 2007 with a new partner. The organisation is managed by the two women with the help of 4 volunteers. Each family takes in about 8 children in their homes.

Nonkqubela Health Club

Summary

The club was initiated by a community member that is a former employee of the City of Cape Town: department of Water and Sanitation. Through working for the department, she attended a training that required the employees to start thinking of what they want to do for the development of their communities. The idea of starting a health club that will be responsible for raising awareness on health related matters came from attending this training. The founder then presented her idea to other community members who saw a need for such a club in the three communities that Nonkqubela works in. The club started with educating the community about cleanliness and living in healthy communities.

Thul'uzobona

Summary

This youth organisation focuses on sports development for the young people of the ward 35 community of Phillipi. The organisation was established based on the increasing involvement of young people in social ill behaviours such as substance abuse, crime and teenage pregnancy.  The group then saw the need to get the youth involved in sports to ensure that their time is spent on developmental activities. The founders of the organization have been involved with sports since they were young and now feel that they have to give back to their community and help children to explore their talents as well as to see the youth of Philippi actively involved in sports.

The Shepard Ministries

Summary

The shepherd was started in 2008 by 2 local women who were unemployed & saw the need to do something for the development of youth in the area. The main motivation was youth vulnerability to crime, HIV/AIDS & other bad activities. The first activities were dance & Drama which would be done in 1 of the women's homes. Other leader came in soon after but not much was happening other than the youth Arts activities which were not sufficiently structured (happening more loosely). Given a piece of land in the Philippi fresh market, which they had to clear off the large bush area which occupied the land & started planting crops without any prior experience & expertise.
