INTEGRATED COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT (ICDP)

CBOs are a manifestation of community responses to community issues, driven by community members themselves. The CBOs' close alignment with their communities and wealth of knowledge and expertise of their communities, make them critical players in community development. Furthermore, they play a crucial role in creating conscious and active citizenship

The ICDP's unique approach is to be led by the CBOs of the 2 wards in Philippi to foster and grow community activism into tangible improvements in the daily lives of the citizens in Philippi . The ICDP facilitates linkages, platforms and capacity building processes as to strengthen the community initiated organisations and initiatives.

The ICDP focuses on ward 35 and 88 in Philippi. By focusing on a specific geographic area, it creates opportunities for community organisations to identify partners in development, tackle community issues together and identify opportunities in the community. Through this collaborative action the community will be stronger organised to mobilise, act and engage in conversations with government.

Simultaneously 20 CBOs will be supported with institutional strengthening as to be more impactful in their community. We seek to build their capacity to plan, organise, mobilise resources and initiate development activities within their community.

By strengthening CBOs internally and creating platforms for CBOs to collaborate, the community will be put back in the driver position to create the path for their own development.

This programme seeks to inform us about replicable principles in community development.

The expected outcomes of the ICDP are:

  • Pro-activeness of citizens contributes towards an improved quality of life of Philippi residents (overall outcome)
  • CBOs have a strong representative body which takes collective issues forward to relevant stakeholders
  • There is a coordinated & integrated range of services being delivered to Philippi
  • There is a deeper appreciation of existing assets in Philippi which are used to seize social and economic opportunities for the community
  • There is a comprehensive community development model which can be adapted and replicated in other marginalised communities in South Africa.
  • Government involves CBO body systematically in decision making processes related to the Philippi area.
